We must “take [up]…the sword of the Spirit” as part of our Christian armor [Ephesians 6:17]. We must use the sword as a weapon. We must pierce others, Christians and non-Christians, with the truth of God’s Word. How do you wield the sword of the Spirit? How do you use your tongue? Are you daily setting others on fire through the Word? Are you daily comforting, feeding, healing, piercing, and quickening [making alive] others through the Word? If not, think about this. To pierce others with the Word, we must let the Word pierce us. Do you daily let God burn, cleanse, comfort, feed, heal, pierce, purify, quicken, and try you through His Word? When you read God’s Word, does your “heart burn within” you [Luke 24:32]?
Just as we cannot pierce others with the Word unless it has pierced us, so also the Word cannot pierce us unless it has been pierced. And it has! Christ, the living Word, was pierced on the cross for us [Psalm 22:16, Zechariah 12:10, John 19:34, 37, Revelation 1:7].
Just as the Word tries us [Job 23:10, 34:36, Psalm 17:3, 66:10, 105:19, Jeremiah 12:3, Daniel 12:10, Zechariah 13:9, Hebrews 11:17, James 1:12, 1 Peter 1:7, Revelation 2:2, 10, 3:18], so also Christ the living Word was tried on the cross for us [2 Samuel 22:31, Psalm 12:6, 18:30, Isaiah 28:16].
Just as the Word quickens us [Psalm 71:20, 80:18, 119:25, 37, 40, 50, 88, 93, 107, 149, 154, 156, 159; 143:11, Romans 8:11, 1 Corinthians 15:36, 45, Ephesians 2:1, 5, Colossians 2:13], so also Christ the living Word was quickened by the Word, when God raised Him from the dead [John 5:21, 6:63, Romans 4:17, 1 Timothy 6:13, 1 Peter 3:18]. What is resurrection power? The Word of God! God spoke the word of life to Christ the Word of Life and He rose up from the grave! When Jesus Christ returns, He will quicken the dead and the living and give us new bodies. We will then be truly alive! “Behold, I tell you a mystery: We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed—in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality” [1 Corinthians 15:51-53].
What is the point here? Just this: God will never ask anything of us that He has not already asked of His Son, Jesus Christ. So if God is burning, cleansing, and piercing you through His Word, even if it seems painful at times, rejoice! Christ experienced the same for you.
