Is marriage a delusion? Of course not! But Satan is a deceiver. He wants us to believe everything both wrong and deadly about God, eternity, ourselves, and the facts of life. Satan wants to delude and dupe us. In these past twenty years, he’s been very successful. What was unmentionable two decades ago is now passé, the law, or clamoring for legality and social acceptance.
God designed marriage and family – one man and one woman in a life partnership producing and rearing children in a stable environment. No other sexual partnership is capable of this stability. God created marriage because he wants “godly offspring,” children who will love and obey him (Malachi 2:15). God gave us gender-specific sexual equipment at conception for a reason. They’re time-sensitive tools with rules. When we misuse or break them, we only hurt ourselves and others. We also suffer divine consequences, both here and in eternity.
We see this divine pattern of marriage and family in Eden. God created a man named Adam and gave him a woman named Eve, whom he’d made from the man’s rib (Genesis 2:7, 21-22). Eve was able to bear children before the fall. The curse just made it painful (3:16). Of Eve’s three named children, Abel and Seth were godly men who “called on the name of the Lord” (4:26).
This family foreshadows two spiritual realities. First is the marriage in heaven between Jesus Christ and his bride the church (Ephesians 5:23-32) – the “marriage supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9). But we won’t bear any children there. We’re doing that already, here on earth. As virgins betrothed to Christ, we bear spiritual children – “godly offspring” or converts – through the Holy Spirit. This is the great lesson of Eve, Sarah, Hannah, Mary, and others. Spiritually we’re all like Mary, adding sons and daughters to Christ’s bride.
God wants his very best for us. This “best” is marriage, both physical and spiritual. However, what God creates and loves, Satan hates. He hates stable marriages, loving families, Jesus Christ, and his church. So the father of lies (John 8:44) deceives people into hating God and what he loves too. Instead of seeing rules and boundaries as protection, sinners wrongly interpret them as restrictions they must break. But redefining marriage as God designed it is not freedom or innovation. It’s demonic activity, gross sin that must be judged.
This practice may have been common among some Bible saints. Abraham and King David spring to mind. But I think God just put up with it. The first instance of polygamy appears in the cursed line of Cain; Lamech took two wives (Genesis 4:19). The divine marriage ideal appears in Eden. God created one woman for one man, Eve for Adam. This marital relationship ideally produces the fewest emotional problems between spouses and their children.
Spiritually, God is not a polygamist. He has one bride, Israel. Her taking other lovers is adultery and idolatry. It’s the same with us. Christ has one bride, the church (2 Corinthians 11:2). Our spiritually taking another Jesus, spirit, or gospel is adultery and idolatry (11:4).
Men fit women and women fit men – sexually, psychologically, and emotionally. Same-sex relationships don’t “fit.” They’re not even capable of producing children. As explained before, godly offspring is God’s real purpose in sex. God gave us gender-specific sexual equipment so we can bear children, within marriage! Homosexuals selfishly deny reproductive science and the God who made them. Click here to read my articles on homosexuality.
Adults fit adults, usually. Laws, social mores, the partners’ sexual development, and their maturity (emotional, psychological, and spiritual) are what really matter. These four factors change over time. What is legal and socially acceptable in one generation may be neither in the next, and vice-versa. However, legal isn’t always right. Second, age-related maturity in one generation may be immaturity in the next. Thirty is the new twenty today.
Regardless of changing laws, mores, and maturity levels, adult-child relationships are pedophile in nature. Pedophilia is not a sexual orientation either. It is sin. Pre-pubescent children cannot sexually reproduce. Since godly offspring is God’s real purpose for sex, pedophiles selfishly deny reproductive science and the God who made them.
“Do not stir up nor awaken love until it pleases” (Song of Solomon 1:7, 3:5, 8:4).
Don’t rob the cradle! God birthed Israel in Ur, with Abraham. He married her only after she had “matured” and her “breasts were formed” (Ezekiel 16:7) – the Passover in Egypt. This moment, not before, was the “time of love” (16:8). It’s the same with us. God doesn’t spiritually reproduce converts through “babes in Christ” (1 Corinthians 3:1). He waits until we can eat “strong meat” (3:2, Hebrews 5:12, 14). Only then can we become spiritual mothers and fathers to new Christians.
Any sexual act between a person and animal is ungodly. God calls it “perversion” (Leviticus 18:23) and the penalty is death, for both the animal and human being (20:15-16, Exodus 22:19). The Bible contains no record of bestiality. We only know about it because God told Israel that the Canaanites and other cultures had practiced it, among other things, so he cast them out and let Israel take their defiled land (Leviticus 18:24-28, 20:22-23). The land itself “vomits” when people practice such ungodliness, bestiality included (18:28, 20:22).
When Adam named the animals, he couldn’t find a “helper comparable to him” (Genesis 2:20) –someone with a heart, mind, and soul. So God made Adam one: Eve, another human being (2:21-25). Contrary to evolution, people, animals, and plants were created according to “kind” and reproduce based on “kind” (1:11-12, 21, 24-25). Species don’t mingle. People can’t sexually produce animals or plants, and vice-versa. Since godly offspring is God’s real purpose for sex, those who practice bestiality deny reproductive science and the God who made them. Besides, what relational meeting of minds and hearts can exist between a person and an animal?
Days of Noah and Lot
The ungodly cultures in which Noah and Lot lived foreshadow the Second Coming of Jesus Christ (Matthew 24:37-39, Luke 17:26-30). Just before they were destroyed, these people had redefined marriage. Those in Sodom gave themselves to fornication and “strange flesh” (Genesis 19:5, Jude 7). Besides homosexuality, they may have also practiced pedophilia and bestiality. We don’t know. Likewise, before the flood came people were “marrying and giving in marriage” (Matthew 24:38, Luke 17:27). I don’t think this just means that they were planning for the future, i.e. marrying and raising children instead of seeking God. Something else was going on.
The “sons of God,” possibly Seth’s line, married the “daughters of men,” possibly the line of Cain (Genesis 6:2). These people may also have taken more than one wife (6:2). Lamech, five generations after Cain, took two wives (4:19). Such unions, polygamous or not, are spiritual adultery to a holy God who insists on spiritual separation. God’s judgment was simple: man is “indeed flesh” and “the thoughts of his heart [are] only evil continually” (6:3, 5). So he destroyed the human race, except for Noah and his immediate family, in a worldwide flood (6:17-18). God also destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah by raining fire from heaven on them (19:24-28).
Today, homosexuality is legal in many countries and in some states here in America. People are now pushing for the legalization of polygamy, pedophilia, and bestiality. Just as in the days of Noah and Lot, marriage is being redefined in ungodly ways. It’s “the final delusion” before the anti-Christ comes to power. But divine judgment is coming. Jesus Christ will return to earth and destroy his enemies (Revelation 19:11-21).
We don’t have to be like the ungodly people who lived among Noah and Lot. We can be righteous in this generation, choosing to trust and obey Jesus before he returns. For those trapped in sexual sin, spiritual freedom is available by faith in Christ through the Holy Spirit – if they repent.
Don’t listen to Satan and let marriage be “the final delusion” before the anti-Christ. Say no to polygamy, homosexuality, pedophilia, and bestiality. Then say yes to Jesus. He invites you to “the marriage supper of the Lamb” (Revelation 19:9).
