“You know how to discern the face of the sky, but you cannot discern the signs of the times.” – Matthew 16:3 (NKJV)
Some of my friends rightly moan about the church’s refusal to stand up, speak up, and fight. Sadly, she’s in the midst of a deadly moral and spiritual crisis and doesn’t even know it. Instead, the sleeping church keeps playing ‘church’ while trying to ‘keep it positive.’
Spiritual slumber is a refusal to “discern the signs of the times” that we’re living in. A B&H Publishing reporter told a young actor at the “Courageous” (2011) premiere in Atlanta that one day he would be an old man and wonder who the young person was in this film. Even now at my home church, each time the co-pastor blesses girl babies he prays God will give them the right man to marry. This is ridiculous! Jesus is coming in the next ten years, but they’re not looking for him. America and the world are self-destructing before our eyes, but the church is asleep!
Adolf Hitler took control of Germany in 1933 and then overran Europe. Sadly, the UK praised Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain for giving them “peace in our time” when he signed Hitler’s 1938 Munich Pact. America elected FDR in 1940 because he promised to keep them out of war. Both nations were asleep to the fact that the world was at war and that Hitler’s victims needed saviors. Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg’s failed coup in Berlin on July 20, 1944, alerted Hitler’s enemies to the same problem. Nazi Germany was asleep to the fact that it was losing World War II. The war would end in the nation’s humiliating defeat nine months later.
The church is repeating history in her insistence on “keeping it positive.” Such cultural blindness ignores reality. I addressed this problem in my article “Sodom: Cursing the Darkness.” Silence is cowardice. It didn’t save the Jews in Hitler’s Europe and it won’t save the church now. God may remove Christians’ platforms for the gospel if they remain silent. They’re on dangerous ground.
The invasion of Poland and Pearl Harbor were rude awakenings. I pray God gives the church the same rude awakening in 2014. She needs an electric jolt, a devastating dose of reality that will permanently alter the way she sees herself and the world. The church must seek the presence of Jesus. She needs to stand up, speak out, and fight. War is coming. I’ve seen it in my dreams.
“I’m not here to teach or mentor. I’m here to awaken.” – Robert Frost
This is why I like Glenn Beck and IHOP (Kansas City) so much. Although I dislike the cult of Mormonism and disagree with some of IHOP’s theology, I know these people are “awakeners.” I’m also here to “awaken.” The church’s spiritual task is bigger than fighting abortion, evolution, homosexuality, or atheism. We must awaken the bride of Christ for the final great battle.
- Warn the church that Jesus is coming soon. The world is falling apart in preparation for the anti-Christ. We’re at war. Now is the time to fight.
- Recruit and train Christians to awaken, speak, pray, and fight. The church needs its own spiritual military: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, etc.
I don’t know how to ‘awaken’ the church, except through this blog and social media. I don’t know how to mobilize people to fight either. But I pray God equips me for war. Jesus is coming. The church must wake up and seek God’s face in prayer. “The weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds” (2 Corinthians 10:4, NKJV).
I want people of courage who will “stand in the gap” (Ezekiel 22:30). In the final coming battle, those “who know their God” will be “strong” and do “great exploits” (Daniel 11:32, NKJV)!
