Mercy Saw Me

jesus-and-mary“She said she’d had a vision of herself, bound in chains, a prisoner of sin and misery. Then she saw our Lord Jesus, holding the key, ready to free her if she would but turn to Him. Then Lady Katherine saw her chains falling away, her downcast head of shame becoming a bowed head of worship. She lifted her freed hands to praise Him, and to point the way for others. … Afterward, she drew a figure based on her vision. She commissioned the fountain and oversaw the work herself. It was her way of commemorating the moment. To thank Him for the grace He had given her.” – Julie Klassen, The Dancing Master

God is “gracious and merciful” (Jonah 4:2). He is also righteous, just, and holy. The book of Jonah displays this truth perfectly. God righteously judged the people of Nineveh when he told the prophet Jonah to warn them of divine destruction as a result of their wickedness (1:2). When the people of Nineveh heard the word of the Lord, they “believed God, proclaimed a fast, and put on sackcloth” (3:5). In other words, they repented. As a result, God righteously turned from his anger and showed the people mercy by not destroying the city (3:10).

Jonah preach NinevehGod is God. He does not change (Malachi 3:6). Like Jonah, believers today are commanded to preach the gospel of salvation in Jesus Christ (Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15, Luke 24:47, Acts 1:8, 2 Corinthians 5:18-20). Like the people of Nineveh, sinners today are commanded to repent and believe (Acts 2:38, 3:19).

We must warn people of the righteous wrath of God (Romans 1:18). The wages of sin is eternal death in hell for those who do not repent (6:23). We cannot tickle ears (2 Timothy 4:3). Judgment is coming. However, we must love divine mercy – not turn away from it (Micah 6:8). The mercy of God is conviction, repentance, and faith.

Beautiful
That’s how mercy saw me
When I was broken and so lost
Mercy looked past all my faults
The justice of God saw what I had done
But mercy saw me through the Son
Not what I was, but what I could be
That’s how mercy saw me
