“If the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?” – Psalm 11:3 (NKJV)*
What’s happening in the Christian world today? Why are conservative evangelicals saying “yes” to homosexuality and other religions? I expect theological and moral liberalism at Fuller University and Saddleback Church. I don’t expect it at Liberty University and World Vision.
Inviting Mormons like Glenn Beck and New Agers like Roma Downey as speakers in the past few years hasn’t seemed to bother the evangelical conscience of Liberty University. Neither did endorsing the Mormon Mitt Romney as Republican Presidential nominee in 2012. Unlike Beck, Romney is a high priest in this dangerous cult. Does Liberty care? No.
Last year, a former homosexual student said he received no ex-gay therapy at Liberty. Staff just advised him that they wanted “to help me to like myself, and to find peace with the real Brandon.” However, Christianity is not a religion of comfort. The peace of Jesus Christ cannot co-exist with sin. Instead, godly conviction of sin should make us extremely un-comfortable with ourselves. True holiness is saying no to the false comforts of sin, self, and this world as we’re daily transformed into the image of Jesus. He is the standard, not self.
Last week, Liberty hired a gay choreographer and LGBT advocate named Geoffrey Goldberg to help students with its production of “Mary Poppins.” When questioned by the media, faculty said that Goldberg’s personal life wasn’t a factor in the hiring decision, nor was it their business. Instead, he was hired as an independent contractor on the basis of his professional record. Such employees are not required to “adhere to the university’s doctrinal beliefs.”
Yet this statement doesn’t match Liberty’s code of conduct, which bans all homosexual activity. Liberty has a vested interest in hiring people who will help students succeed both academically and spiritually. Not only will Goldberg’s presence hinder students spiritually, he may permanently harm them. Unfortunately, Liberty’s law and medical schools have altered their non-discrimination policies to include sexual orientation.
World Vision USA, a non-profit charity, went one step further last week. President Richard Stearns instructed the board to sanction same-sex marriages among its employees. The decision was passed, but not unanimously. Days after a public outcry in the Christian community, World Vision retracted its decision. Still, the spiritual damage was done. If this charity wants to redeem its Christian character, then Stearns and those who passed the decision should be replaced.
Hillsong Church is little better. Thanks to Darlene Zschech, this church has given the world excellent worship music for 20 years. Yet Pastor Brian Houston said last month that there is no difference between the Muslim Allah and the Christian Yahweh (Jehovah). Hillsong has also begun celebrating the “color run,” a Hindu festival.
Meanwhile, some so-called Christians have been obeying demons and killing their children, both born and unborn. Others have begun ridiculing preaching and prophecy, as they abandon witnessing and prayer. A few Christian music artists have said publicly that they do not believe Christians will be judged, so they can do anything they want. Such Christians apply this non-judgmental “live and let live” attitude to other religions, secular culture, and sex. Yoga, worldly music and films, homosexuality, and fornication are okay now. Christians won’t be judged!
As the evangelical Christian stronghold is being destroyed before our eyes, homosexuals, drug addicts, atheists, Muslims, witches, and murderers are finding salvation in Jesus Christ alone. What’s happening? Why the sudden switch? The answer is simple.
“The stone which the builders rejected has become the chief cornerstone. This was the Lord’s doing and it is marvelous in our eyes.” – Psalm 118:22-23, Matthew 21:42
Thanks to John the Baptist, “tax collectors and harlots entered the kingdom of God” ahead of Pharisees and Sadducees (Matthew 21:31). Thanks to Jesus’ ministry, so did Romans. After Pentecost, “uneducated” fishermen humiliated the religious elite (Acts 4:13).
The same thing happened during the Protestant Reformation 1500 years later. Thanks to William Tyndale’s English translation of the Bible, ploughboys and merchants knew more scripture than Roman Catholic cardinals, popes, and kings.
I earnestly pray that the kingdom of God will be snatched from the hands of nominal Christians and then “given to a nation bearing the fruits of it” in repentance (Matthew 3:8, 21:43). I pray that more homosexuals, drug addicts, atheists, Muslims, witches, and murderers find salvation in Jesus alone. The righteous Judge is returning soon (Acts 10:42, 2 Timothy 4:1, 1 Peter 4:5). May the chief Cornerstone grind his enemies to powder (Matthew 21:44)!
