Three thousand years ago, during the reign of King Saul, the heathen Philistines waged war against a holy Israel (1 Samuel 17:1-2). Their champion Goliath, from Gath, was ten feet tall (17:4). He wore a bronze helmet, bronze mail, and bronze armor on his legs (17:5-6). Goliath also had a bronze javelin and an “iron spearhead weighing six hundred shekels” (17:6-7). Each day, he taunted Israel with these words: “Why have you come out to line up for battle? I defy the armies of Israel this day. Give me a man so that we may fight together” (17:8, 10).
Three thousand years have passed, but little has changed. Here in America, “the land of the free,” a heathen giant has arisen. Millions strong, this gay mafia walks tall and proud. Wearing the armor of crooked law and perverted justice, it demands liberty for itself – gay and transgender “equality,” gay “marriage” – as it bullies Christians and defies their God. A slandered pizzeria and congressional houses in Arkansas and Indiana are the sites of the most recent defeats.
When King Saul and the Israelite army heard Goliath’s words, “they were dismayed and greatly afraid. … All the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him” (1 Samuel 17:11, 24). No one tried to fight Goliath. Even Saul’s promises of wealth, his daughter’s hand in marriage, and “exemption from taxes” weren’t enough to make them fight (17:25).
Today, when most Christians hear the gay mafia’s taunts – liberal judges and media, Apple, Microsoft, Starbucks, Wal-Mart, etc – they react in the same manner. Afraid for their jobs, homes, and families, some Christians leave their religion at church. Others accept the enemy’s demands and then hide. Few stand and fight. The reasons are simple. Most Christians today don’t have spiritual anointing and boldness, or the assurance of divine protection and past success.
David was different. The Spirit of the Lord was upon him because he’d been anointed by the prophet Samuel to be the next king of Israel (1 Samuel 16:13). David also had the assurance of divine protection, having killed a lion and bear that had threatened his flock (17:34-36). So, after Goliath taunted Israel, he boldly asked, “Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God” (17:26)? David didn’t fight wearing standard armor either (17:39). With just a slingshot and stones, he approached the giant “in the name of the Lord of hosts” and prophesied divine victory for Israel (17:40-47). After Goliath fell down dead, David cut off his head (17:49-51). Then Israel shouted, chased the Philistines, and plundered them (17:52-53).
Where are the anointed Christians today who will fight the gay mafia? I don’t know America’s future, so I can’t prophesy either victory or defeat. But maybe God is allowing this war so “that all the earth may know that there is a God” in Jesus Christ (1 Samuel 17:46). “The battle is the Lord’s” and he doesn’t use earthly weapons (17:47). So let us repent and pray!
