“The remnant that are left of the captivity … are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.” – Nehemiah 1:3
I published an editorial a few years ago called “Oil and Water.” I didn’t understand why apostate churches try to combine spiritual light and darkness, e.g. “theistic evolution” and “gay Christian.” These concepts are oil and water; they don’t mix. Separation is inevitable. Still, the light didn’t dawn until “The Marriage of Heaven and Hell: Christian Paganism.”
Here’s the point. What God divides, Satan unites. On the first day of creation, “God divided the light from the darkness” (Genesis 1:4). On the sixth day, he created “male and female” (1:27). God also divided humanity from other created beings – sun, moon, stars, trees, land animals, birds, etc. As the apostle Paul notes, “All flesh is not the same flesh” (1 Corinthians 15:39). Even creation itself is separate from the Creator.
First comes the natural, then the spiritual (1 Corinthians 15:46). Therefore, just as God divides physical light from darkness, so also he differentiates “between holy and unholy … unclean and clean” (Leviticus 10:10). Why? God is holy (11:44-45, 19:2, 21:8). He cannot look on evil (Habakkuk 1:13). Man / animal, man / woman, creator / creation, light / darkness, good / evil, life / death, and lies / truth: this world is saturated with both natural and spiritual walls. We’d do well to maintain them.
What God loves, Satan hates. So, if God loves division, then Satan loves unity. Since Eden, he’s been leading humanity to turn black and white into fifty shades of gray. Satan’s greatest triumphs have come in the past twenty years. “Chrislam,” “gay Christian,” “gay marriage,” “theistic evolution,” and transgenderism are all his handiwork. Legalized pedophilia, polygamy, and bestiality – possibly as “marriage” – are next. The most alarming news has come out of the United Kingdom. Instead of being mature, responsible adults by marrying and working, ten thousand men choose to dress up and act like dogs in what they call “puppy play.” All this activity is demonic. Around the world today, especially in Western nations, both natural and spiritual walls are breaking down. Civilization as we know it is crumbling.
Deconstructionists praise such chaos. Like the Hegelian (Kantian) dialectic “thesis-antithesis-synthesis,” they claim that A vs. B, e.g. light vs. darkness, is a false opposition. By overturning the concept in society (politics, literature, etc), one can produce the solution of C (A + B). Yin/yang in Chinese philosophy and the black/white checkerboard symbol of Freemasonry, both of which saturate postmodern culture, espouse this same principle. The very concept is satanic.
“Go through the midst … of Jerusalem, and set a mark upon the foreheads of the men that sigh and that cry for all the abominations that be done in the midst thereof.” – Ezekiel 9:4
When Nehemiah heard what had happened to Jerusalem, he “sat down and wept … and fasted and prayed” (1:4). This mourning went on for “days” (1:4). In other words, Nehemiah stopped his normal routine. If we want to see spiritual walls rebuilt in the lives of sinners, then we must do the same. The end is nigh. It’s too late for cities and nations to repent. It’s still not too late for individuals. Therefore, now is not the time for school, work, and play. “Church as usual” won’t do either. Both corporately and individually, we must weep, fast, and pray.
What did Nehemiah pray? He “confess[ed] the sins of the children of Israel” and his “father’s house” because he knew that broken commandments lead to broken walls (1:6). Do we? “What fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? What communion hath light with darkness? What concord hath Christ with Belial? What part hath he that believeth with an infidel? What agreement hath the temple of God with idols?” (2 Corinthians 6:14-16) If Paul asked these questions of the church today, how would she answer? If we seek fellowship, communion, concord, or agreement between light and darkness by refusing to differentiate between holy and unholy, clean and unclean, then we must confess and repent of sin. Unity is a Trojan horse in the visible church today. If she accepts it, then she’ll suffer the same fate as Troy.
Nehemiah’s final request was for God to show him “mercy in the sight of” King Artaxerxes so that he could rebuild the wall of Jerusalem (1:11-2:8). Will God grant us the same mercy in the sight of local, state, and federal leaders as we seek to rebuild spiritual walls? I don’t know. I doubt it. But we can still pray for such a miracle.
“Submit yourselves … to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded. Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.” – James 4:7-11
How do we rebuild? If we want fellowship with God as his children, then we must “come out,” “be separate,” and “touch not the unclean thing” (2 Corinthians 6:17-18). We shouldn’t act like sinners, giving Satan the victory in doctrine or behavior. We shouldn’t try to unite what God divides either. He created natural and spiritual walls for our benefit. Instead, we must submit to God, share our testimonies as trophies of grace, and be willing to lay down our lives for the name and glory of Jesus Christ (James 4:7, Revelation 12:11). We must also “preach the word … in season [and] out of season; reprove, rebuke, [and] exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine” (2 Timothy 4:2).
As it was in Noah’s day, so it will be when Jesus returns (Matthew 24:37-39, Luke 17:26-27). People will descend into gross darkness until the rapture takes place and tribulation comes (Isaiah 60:2). So we must rebuild walls as we lead sinners into the ark of safety. The door is still open.
